HOW DOES ACUPUNCTURE WORK?
Acupuncture promotes healing by reducing inflammation, relaxing tight muscles, and increasing blood circulation. Acupuncture points are sites to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. This stimulation boosts the body’s natural pain killers and feel-good chemicals like endorphins. When needled, acupuncture points can regulate how the body functions, re-establishing proper balance (homeostasis) and improving basic life functions like sleep and digestion.
WHAT IS THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR ACUPUNCTURE?
Scientific research is attempting to understand the mechanism of acupuncture. At this point, researchers are able to measure activity in specific various body systems when an acupuncture needle is inserted:
1. Increase in peripheral blood flow
2. Increase in the neural pain threshold
3. Release of neurochemicals similar to endorphins
4. Increase in T cells and other immune constituents
5. Increase activity at nerve “gates”
Thermal PET scans also show activity in the regions of the brain responsible for “pain” messages. However, the logic of the meridian network continues to elude scientific observation.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
Each situation is unique. The number of treatments needed varies for each individual and depends on the nature and duration of the issue. Acute conditions respond well to a few treatments in a shorter period of time, and chronic conditions often require weekly treatments for a longer period of time. For most conditions, if we are doing our job well, we will resolve your issue, and your treatment plan will end.
Preventative and wellness acupuncture treatments are a great way to maintain health, optimize athletic performance and reduce stress. Treatment plans for maintenance acupuncture are based on the individual’s needs, and frequencies of these treatments vary, from once a week to once a quarter.
DOES IT HURT?
Fear not! The acupuncture needles that we use are as slender as a hair. They are pre-sterilized and disposable. Most people feel little or no discomfort. Even kids love acupuncture. And once the needles are in, most people relax and enjoy a peaceful nap.
IS IT SAFE?
Yes. Acupuncture is an all-natural and drug-free therapy. The needles used are sterile, single-use needles. There are virtually no side effects from acupuncture treatments.
FIRST VISIT
Initial visits generally last from 60 to 90 minutes.
During your first exam, your acupuncturist will take a detailed health history. You may be asked a wide range of questions about your symptoms, digestion, exercise, sleep habits, emotional states, and anything that may offer insight into your health.
Your practitioner will also employ diagnostic tools that are unique to acupuncture and TCM, such as tongue and pulse diagnosis.
Once your acupuncturist has gathered enough information, you’ll receive a comprehensive treatment plan.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT?
We recommend you wear loose fitting clothing to your appointment. Please eat a little something prior to your treatment and hydrate (as always!).
