Cupping
Cupping is an ancient therapy used to increase circulation, reduce cellular debris, and relieve muscle tension. Oftentimes, manual therapies work by pressing downward on the skin and tissues (think massage or Gua Sha). Cupping works by gently pulling upward on the skin, creating space for blood to flow more readily, nerves to communicate more easily, and for lymph to drain more effectively.
The experience ranges from incredibly soothing to “good pain” - but the result is almost always reduced muscle tension and improved healing times.
At SHÈN, we offer two types of cupping;
- Fire cupping, which uses glass cups and flame to create suction
- Suction cupping, which uses silicone or plastic cups with a handheld pump to create suction without heat
How Cupping Works
Regardless of whether your practitioner uses traditional fire cupping or simple silicone cups, the suction created pulls stagnant blood, lymph, and lactic acid toward the surface of the skin.
The space created between the dermis and these vessels markedly improves circulation, even in the deeper muscle layers, to help reduce pain, improve mobility, and support faster recovery.
Who It’s For
Cupping is often used to:
- Relieve chronic pain and muscle tension
- Support recovery after injury or high training volume
- Boost athletic performance
- Reduce pain associated with nerve impingement or impediment
- Maintain healthy, well-functioning muscle tissue as a form of preventative care
Cupping may be used on its own or alongside acupuncture or manual therapy as part of your overall treatment plan.
