Gua Sha
Gua Sha is a traditional scraping technique used to break up adhesions in our fascia, improve circulation, and reduce muscle tension. And while Gua Sha may be having a moment right now, this modality has been around for centuries!
Using a smooth edged tool, often made from stone or steel, your practitioner will gently “scrape” the skin over areas of injury or discomfort - breaking up sticky fascia and restricted tissue. This may sound painful, but often the experience is that of relief, as tissues that were once “glued” together are now free to move!
How Gua Sha Can Help
By reducing restrictions, whether in the fascia or underlying tissues, Gua Sha promotes better blood flow, improved nerve conductivity, and reduces the feeling tension in the body.
This gentle scraping technique is often used alongside other treatments like acupuncture and manual therapy to encourage faster, deeper tissue recovery.
Who It’s For
This hands-on technique may be recommended as part of your treatment plan if you’re experiencing:
- Muscle tightness or stiffness
- Chronic pain or restricted mobility
- Residual tension following an injury
